Authentic Timber Post and
Beam Homes
Timber frame, or structural post and beam construction is an
age-old technique that dates back about 1400 years and uses solid
wood members, or timbers, joined together to create a structure.
Each structural element, or “bent” is assembled on the ground and is
then raised in place and anchored to other bents, this creating a
structural shell.

|
What is appealing about this type of
construction is that the skeleton of the house is usually
exposed from the inside, leading to unique, and often
breathtaking vistas inside the home. |
|
The frame of the home can be
covered with most any type of wall system, although generally, a
structurally insulated wall panel – or SIP is used. The joints
that connect each post and beam element can be any of a variety
of types including mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail, knee
brace, or even old-style scarf and peg, where a hardwood peg is
literally hammered into a through hole to secure the joint. The
possibilities with timber frame construction are virtually
endless.
